This Primaris Howling Griffons Space Marine army was painted at our Level 2 standard, using the chapter’s classic red and yellow quartered armor scheme. It is a great example of how a strong color scheme can make an entire army look cohesive without needing every model to be painted at a high display level.

The main challenge with the Howling Griffons is getting the quartered armor clean and consistent across the whole army. The red and yellow panels were carefully separated, with shading in the recesses and edge highlights added to define the armor plates. The bright colors stand out especially well against the urban bases, which are covered with rubble, broken concrete and torn Imperial propaganda posters.

The army includes 10 Intercessors, 5 Hellblasters, 3 Inceptors, a Captain, Lieutenants and a Primaris Ancient. The characters received some extra attention to help them stand out from the regular troops. The Ancient carries a detailed chapter banner with gold and red trim, while the Captain and Lieutenants have shaded robes and blue glow effects on their power swords.

The Hellblasters also have light blue plasma effects painted onto their weapon coils. The glow provides a nice contrast against the red and yellow armor without taking attention away from the chapter colors.

The Level 2 approach works particularly well for an army like this. The models have enough shading, highlighting and detail work to look finished on the tabletop, while keeping the overall painting time and cost more reasonable than a full display-level army. The consistent color scheme does a lot of the work in making the collection look impressive as a whole.

This Howling Griffons army is a good example of what we aim for with our Space Marine commission painting: a clean, consistent finish that captures the character of the chapter while keeping the army practical for regular tabletop gaming.
